BATHURST '98

      Mount Panorama, Bathurst- 3, 4 & 5 April 1998

The NSW Region of ASPACI held a weekend meeting (conference) at Bathurst in April 1998.  This was first country meeting of the group and the first organised field activities since 1993. The conference was based at the Professional Development Centre of Charles Sturt University at the base of Mount Panorama, Bathurst.

The conference was well attended with 25 participants, including some country solicitors.  Technical activities included a demonstration of airbag deployment (Bathurst TAFE), inspection of Mount Panorama racing circuit and the Hall of Fame racing museum, tour of the Land Information Centre (mapping, GPS, photogrammetry).  Field activities were carried out on the Mount Panorama circuit and in the grounds of Charles Sturt University.  These included testing of driver reaction time, brake lag, pedestrian running speeds, and linear measurement equipment comparison.  There were also two technical presentations titled 'Computer Simulation of Motor Vehicle Accidents' and '3D Computer Animation of Motor Vehicle Accidents' by Alan and Andrew Brown.

       There she blows
If you blinked then you would have missed it.
This photo is just after the airbag reached full inflation (3ms).
Peak noise level on the back seat of the Commodore was
measured at 118.9dB with all the widows open.

These images are captured from the TAFE video of the demonstration.

A video sequence from the 'surprise' driver reaction test.
      (the driver will remain un-named)

We were just driving along, all innocent like when ....

..... this box appeared ......... onto the roadway .......... and the driver braked.

We stopped, the driver turned to where the box came from .....

finding Alan hidden behind a wall the driver said "#%^&@!#*&!*^*$%"
or some congratulatory words to that effect <grin>.
