"In 1964, Eric Edgar Cooke went to the gallows, the last man to be hanged in Western Australia. He'd killed six people. But as he was read his last rites, Cooke admitted to two other slayings. For state authorities this proved rather inconvenient. Two other men were already in jail serving time for those murders. In her first report for 60 Minutes, Ellen Fanning tells of the terrible injustice suffered by these two men. She reveals new evidence pointing to a grave and continuing miscarriage of justice. Only now, after 30 years, is the West Australian Government considering reopening inquiries and clearing the names of these wrongly convicted men, which details the life of the last person to be hanged in Western Australia." - 60 Minutes. One of the men was John Button
who was convicted of killing his 17 year old sweetheart in a hit and run
accident. On the basis of the fresh evidence unearthed and published
by Estelle, the WA Government has since granted Button another appeal -
a rare event, especially 36 years on.
